Initiative by Nasscom to restrain data piracy in India
Nasscom, (National Association of Software and Service Companies), assuming its regulatory role, in June this year, instituted mechanisms to curb IPR infractions in India by setting a data piracy watchdog. These measures are meant to address legitimate concern on the part of businesses offshoring software development and BPO to India and are a direct result of bad press resulting from some glaring attempts at piracy in the past in the outsourcing arena.
The newly formed “Cyber Crime watchdog” the Data Security Council of India (DSCI) a self regulatory body is an attempt to placate the fears of outsourcing companies.
As reported by Silicon.com, “The DSCI will develop common minimum standards for privacy and security policies, offer certification, enforce a code of ethics and best practice, and punish any breaches by Indian IT and BPO companies - which could include expelling members or calling in police.” As a Nasscom spokesman pointed out DSCI will further augment the best practices already in place and followed scrupulously by most recipients of outsourcing contracts in India.
It is expected DSCI complemented by the National Skills Registry (NSR), “a centralized database of third-party verified personal and professional details of IT and BPO employees that allows employers to vet staff they are recruiting,” will restore the confidence of organizations offshoring to India.
